Have you ever made it to class and you forgot your homework? Or maybe you went out with friends and left your phone or purse at home? What happened.
You almost feel lost. You’ve done everything right, you’ve done your work but you just didn’t put it in your back pack. Or you’ve put all this work into getting ready and excited about a good night but it is ruined because you forgot something. When you don’t bring everything to God, it’s the same way. You can be doing everything else right but just not that one area and it messes up everything. That’s not uncommon living and that’s not the life God called us to.
LUKE 18:22-23When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.
Why was it so difficult for the young ruler to give up his wealth?
The ruler had been doing everything right. In Luke 18:18-21 Jesus is talking to the ruler and outlining all the things that he has done right, but there’s one thing missing. His love for his money outweighed his desire to follow Christ.
What is it that is holding you back from uncommon living or what is it that is hard to give to God?
Giving things that we love and care about to God is difficult. It feels impossible sometimes. But the reward is eternal life. The young ruler asks Jesus, what must I do to inherit eternal life? If the reward for giving something up is eternal life, why do we think that thing is so important? What can be more important than eternal life with Christ?
